WildWords 2007 News

GLC classes are encouraged to upload news stories about the workshops they have done and events they have attended as part of Wildwords 2007.

As Term 3 progresses the number of these postings will grow, eventually building up a general overview of festival happenings.

So please visit often and check out the GLC schools news pages for the latest Wildwords news and photos.

Big Night Out Thanks

How to build a village in one day!

An overall budget of around $50,000 was required to set up the GLC ‘village’ infrastructure to stage the ‘Big Night Out’ in 2008, the size and scope of which has grown enormously since its inception six years ago.

As a free entry event for the community, the steering committee did not have the luxury of just ordering in equipment and expecting delivery, installation and pickup. However, what seemed like a daunting task became possible through a successful grant received from the Lord Mayor’s Urban Initiatives Fund, generous local business sponsorship including major sponsors Metroplex on Gateway and Downtown Toyota, an enormous amount of inkind support from our generous local community including the Leighton Abigroup, Bidvest and M Electrical, and the sheer hard work of GLC staff and volunteers who brought it all together over months of planning and built our GLC Village on the Balmoral SHS Oval.

The commitment of those who convened teams and participated in planning deserves to be recognised and thanked-

• Gerowyn Lacaze, Deputy Principal of Balmoral SHS and her Wildwords ‘Big Night Out’ Steering Committee of Jackie Cann, from Make Art Work, and Cherry Van Ryt, GLC Coordinator for their organisational management of the festival.
• Jackie Cann for her work to source and liaise with sponsors
• Tracey Sofronoff for her administration of equipment lists and schedules
• The team of GLC School Teacher Contacts who coordinated so well the schools’ program contributions- from Balmoral SHS- Trevor Wright, Bulimba SS- Phil Young, Cannon Hill SS- Tanya Abell, Morningside SS- Kim Schembri, Murarrie SS- Belinda Bowden, Norman Park SS- Teresa Raciti and Seven Hills SS- Toyah Mills
• Loretta Mooney in 2008 and Gayle Harris in 2007 for their able financial management.
• Cherry Van Ryt, GLC Coordinator, and Any Henderson from Webconsulting for coordinating the informative Wildwords website

As with any project all the planning in the world will not make it happen without the support and hard work of everyone involved. The Steering Committee would like to thank and acknowledge:

• All the GLC schools’ office staff and ancillary staff and groundsmen whose support services were vital in ensuring the administration and practical needs of the festival were met
• GLC teachers who so enthusiastically embraced Wildwords 2008 and brought their student’s ‘Smart Stuff’ to showcase at the ‘Big Night Out’
• GLC students whose extraordinary work the whole community was privileged to see at the ‘Big Night Out’ displayed in their schools stalls and performed on the stage
• GLC parents and citizens for your attendance at events, catering and help with the ‘Big Night Out’ and expressed positive regard for the extra efforts GLC schools have made to stage the festival
• All of our valued sponsors. Your generosity and support was just fabulous. We are so proud to have such businesses and groups within our midst with such strong civic mindedness and demonstrated value for the education of our children!

Congratulations to all of you. The scale of Wildwords ‘Big Night Out’ 2008 will be remembered as an extraordinary achievement and a benchmark for what can be achieved by this community of seven schools.
