The story of Wildwords

The Gateway Learning Community (GLC) is a network of seven state schools in the Brisbane South District of Education Queensland, who since 2002, have forged a vibrant partnership to enhance educational opportunities for their students, staff, parents and their extended school communities.

The member schools incorporate 250 staff, over 2500 students and the wider school communities of:

Balmoral State High School, Bulimba State School, Cannon Hill State School, Morningside State School, Murarrie State School, Norman Park State School and Seven Hills State School

The GLC is committed to establishing a firm and identifiable profile for state education within the local community. The concept of a student centred, community enriched festival captured the enthusiasm and imagination of the members of GLC and the community at large and has been staged successfully each year since 2003.

The festival’s culminating event, Big Night Out’, brings several thousand local people together in an evening showcase and celebration of children’s learning. It has established a reputation for making an outstanding grass roots contribution to the livability and identity of the local community within which it is held.

  • In its inaugural year, 2003, Wildwords focused on Literacy, involving the creative use of multi-literacies bringing renowned authors and actors, artists and musicians to the GLC stimulating a passion for books and creative expression, and raising awareness of and improving literacy.
  • In 2004 Wildwords focused on Science and Information Technology integrating Science and ICTs across the curriculum in GLC schools, forging partnerships with scientists and Griffith University to bring science alive in schools and improve scientific literacy.
  • In 2005 Wildwords focused on The Arts bringing 28 artists and artist groups in to work with classes on arts projects integrated with the school curriculum.
  • In 2006 in response to Queensland Government’s ‘Smart and Healthy’ initiative, Wildwords focused on Health and Wellbeing, to promote healthy bodies and healthy minds as a lifelong goal for all.
  • In 2007 Wildwords, focused on our local area promoting learning and teaching about the Study of Society and the Environment (SOSE), a Key Learning Area in the Curriculum of Queensland schools.
  • In 2008 Wildwords focused on the ‘smart stuff’ our students were producing to promote learning and teaching related to the Queensland Government and Education Queensland Smart Stat priority initiatives.

The GLC is again staging Wildwords in 2009 this time with the theme ‘Queensland kids thinking creatively”, again promoting learning and teaching related to the Education Queensland’s Smart State priority initiatives including:

  • Q150 Anniversary celebrations
  • 2009- Year of Creativity
  • Queensland Sustainable Schools Initiative (QESSI)

Wildwords will

  • foster creative, positive relationships and partnerships across the GLC schools, with industry professionals and other educational and government bodies.
  • showcase ‘smart’ and ‘creative’ student learning outcomes from GLC schools’ curriculum and GLC Projects being run in 2009.
  • extend informal education opportunities to the wider local community.
