Wildwords 2008 - Smart Stuff

the annual festival being held during Term 3, 2008
for the students, teachers and families of the Gateway Learning Community.


This year the focus for Wildwords is the staging of

Big Night Out


the GLC’s premier, annual, showcase event for the whole community.
GLC schools, local community groups and businesses will be bringing their ‘smart stuff’ along
to this huge, free, outdoors event to be held on

Friday August 29, 5-9 pm, at the Balmoral State High School Village Green

to promote learning and teaching related to the Queensland Government and Education Queensland Smart State priority initiatives including:

    • Smart Moves- in ‘2008 Year of Physical Activity’
    • Smart Classrooms- Information and Communication Technology (ICTS)
    • Smart Choices- Healthy food and drink
    • Queensland Sustainable Schools Initiative (QESSI)

In a program that’s bigger and better than ever before Wildwords ‘Big Night Out’, now in its sixth year, promises a wonderful evening of educational entertainment and fun for GLC families and the whole community.

Wildwords 2008

Over 5000 local families came along last year and with the promise of this year’s wonderful program, that number can be expected to increase. The event line-up is growing and already some 40 marquees and 3 stage areas will be needed to stage the event!

Here is an overview of just some of this year’s broad program-

    • Dance, drama and music performances from over 600 students from Prep to Yr 12 across 3 stage areas
    • An opening parade and ceremony featuring a GLC combined choir of some 100 students and Brisbane Indigenous Dancers Nunukul Yuggera
    • Mini-Olympics and Futsal competitions
    • Giant games to be played
    • Caribbean steel drummers and electronic drums from Access Drumming
    • Sustainability Grove- a special space promoting sustainable practices involving displays and activities from GLC schools, Geckoes Wildlife, Cannon Hill Bushcare Group, GLC Active School Travel, Healthy Waterways, Beelarong and Northey St Farms, SOS Permaculture and Bulimba Library
    • Australian Geographic stall and prizes
    • GLC school stalls and activities showcasing ‘Smart’ student work
    • The return of the acclaimed Balmoral SHS Staff Band
    • Combined Schools art exhibition
    • Fireworks
    • Food from GLC P&Cs and others
    • Rock climbing, jumping castles and mega slide
